The Metropolitan Ambulance Service provides 24 hour emergency coverage with 2 man crews to the Southern Peninsula through it's branch at Sorrento.
This is located at 70 Hotham Road, opposite the McFarlan Reserve.
The station is staffed by 5 officers (1 MICA Paramedic and 4 Ambulance Paramedics) working a 10 hour shift from 8.00am - 6.00pm with after hours on-call duties in an 8 day on/ 6 day off roster.
All requests for ambulance attendance should be directed to the Emergency 000 service. (link to calling an Ambulance)
There are three vehicles at Sorrento- 2 Mercedes ambulances and a Commodore sedan.
As the Southern Peninsula is a popular diving location specialist resuscitation equipment is carried to treat SCUBA divers who succumb to the effects of decompression illness.
The majority of the staff are also trained as helicopter crewmen which allows them to work closely with the local volunteer rescue squad when called out to rescue injured people from boats, the cliffs along the back (ocean) beaches and other inaccessible places.
The Peninsula is also served by Air Ambulance Victoria's MICA ambulance helicopter.
Stay Safe
Back (ocean) Beaches:
Visitors to the area are advised to keep away from the sandstone cliffs along the ocean beaches as these are very unstable. Numerous people have recieved serious injuries falling from these cliffs and there has been one fatality in the recent past.
The beaches at Gunnamatta, Portsea and Sorrento are patrolled by lifesavers and these should be the beaches of first choice if swimming along the ocean beach areas. Another safe swimming area is located at the end of Diamond Bay Road, Sorrento. This is an enclosed bay popular with families. While the currents at this beach are somewhat reduced from the open beaches, care should be taken when swimming here.

Resident and Holiday home owners:
All home owners are asked to provide clear street numbering for their properties as this will greatly help ambulance to finding their location without delay. This is especially important in time of serious illness or life threatening emergencies.
Problem areas remain along Melbourne Road (Sorrento through to Rye) and Dundas Street (Rye) where problem entrances are from a service road or are situated higher than the road surface with the number posted on the gate instead of at road level. Residents are urged to critically inspect the clarity of their property number in daylight and at night.

Know where you are:
All emergency services depend on accurate location details to be able to provide a prompt response. Visitors should ensure they are aware of their location details at all times.
