
The Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad is a volunteer emergency service located at Hotham Rd, Sorrento.¬¨¬®‚Äö?тĆ Its members are on call 24hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the whole year.
The formation of the Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad was prompted by the disappearance of the then Prime Minister Harold Holt from Cheviot Beach, Portsea.
The Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad covers a wide area extending from approx, Apollo Bay to Wilson's Promentary, however its main area of operation is the Mornington Peninsula, Port Phillip Bay and the Ocean Beaches of the Mornington Peninsula.
The role of the organisation is to provide support to any person or organisation that requires assistance in often life - threatening situations.
The Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad operates a Bell Longranger Helicopter, which has been equipped with the most up-to-date search and rescue equipment available for a helicopter of its size.
It is fitted with a cargo hook, rescue winch, high intensity search light, patient stretcher, oxygen resuscitation equipment and radio equipment which allows communications with Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade, Surf Life Savers as well as other emergency services.
The Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad also operates a 7.53m Stabicraft purpose built rescue boat which is powered by twin 135hp Honda Outboards.¬¨¬®‚Äö?тĆ The boat is equipped with radar, GPS Chart Plotter, marine radio, mobile phone and depth indicator.¬¨¬®‚Äö?тĆ Other equipment¬¨¬®‚Äö?тĆonboard includes a davit, stretcher, first aid supplies and tow lines.¬¨¬®‚Äö?тĆ
In addition to this, the Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad operates a Communications Bus, which enables searches/ rescues to be coordinated from the scene.
All equipment is owned outright by the Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad on behalf of the community. No charges are made to anybody or any organisation that is assisted. Almost all funding¬¨¬®‚Äö?тĆcomes from public donations.
