The SS Cheviot was shipwrecked off Point Nepean in 1887. The entrance to Port Phillip Bay is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous in the world being narrow with submerged shoals and treacherous seas and tides. Over 100 vessels have been wrecked in the vicinity of the heads. Only 24 of the Cheviot's 59 passengers were saved.
