Fort Nepean Walk

Fort Nepean Trail

Mornington Peninsula National Park

Length: 3.5 kilometres
Walk: 1.5 hours one way
Track: Good
Grade: Flat
Start: Gunners car park
Finish: Fort Nepean
Nearby: Portsea
Permits/bookings: Cycling permitted every day from 10am to 3pm.

Built in 1882, Fort Nepean was in service until the end of World War Two. In that time, its guns fired just two shots in anger. Today you can explore the tunnels leading to gun emplacements, ammunition stores and bunkers, and inspect the historic cemetery.

The walk passes Cheviot Beach, where Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared in 1967, and The Rip, the treacherous divide between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale that has claimed many ships since European settlement.
