Coastal Waters Forecast for Victoria

Issued at 5:10 am EDT on Tuesday 2 December 2008
for the period until midnight EDT Thursday 4 December 2008.

Warning Summary at issue time

Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Mallacoota.

Weather Situation

A weakening cold front over eastern Bass Strait will move away to the east this morning but another cold front will cross Tasmania early Wednesday.A high pressure system will drift over Victoria later Wednesday, reaching the Tasman Sea on Thursday. A low pressure trough will cross South Australia on Thursday and Victoria on Friday.

West Coast: SA-VIC Border to Cape Otway

Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Mallacoota.

Forecast for Tuesday until midnight

Winds: Westerly 20 to 30 knots decreasing to 20 to 25 knots during the afternoon. Seas: 2 to 3 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 2 to 3 metres increasing to 2 to 4 metres from the late morning.

Forecast for Wednesday

Winds: West to southwesterly 15 to 25 knots becoming southwesterly 15 to 20 knots during the morning then tending south to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. Seas: 2 to 3 metres decreasing below 2 metres during the morning then decreasing to below 1 metre later in the evening. Swell: Southwesterly 1.5 to 3 metres.

Forecast for Thursday

Winds: East to southeasterly 10 to 20 knots tending east to northeasterly during the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres increasing up to 2 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southwesterly 1 to 2 metres.

Central Coast: Cape Otway to Wilsons Promontory

Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Mallacoota.

Forecast for Tuesday until midnight

Winds: Westerly 20 to 30 knots. Seas: 2 to 3 metres decreasing to 2 metres later in the evening. Swell: Westerly 1.5 to 3 metres.

Forecast for Wednesday

Winds: West to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots decreasing to 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon then becoming southwesterly 10 to 15 knots later in the evening. Seas: 2 to 3 metres decreasing to 2 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Westerly 1.5 to 3 metres decreasing to 1 to 2 metres late in the evening.

Winds: Southeasterly 5 to 15 knots tending easterly 10 to 20 knots during the afternoon then increasing to 20 to 25 knots during the evening. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres increasing up to 3 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Westerly 1 to 2 metres.

Central Gippsland Coast: Wilsons Promontory to Lakes Entrance

Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Mallacoota.

Forecast for Tuesday until midnight

Winds: Westerly 15 to 25 knots, reaching 30 knots at times. Seas: Up to 3 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 2 metres.

Forecast for Wednesday

Winds: West to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots becoming southwesterly 15 to 20 knots later in the evening. Seas: Up to 3 metres decreasing to 2 metres later in the evening. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 2 metres.

Forecast for Thursday

Winds: Southwesterly 10 to 20 knots tending southeasterly up to 10 knots during the morning then tending east to northeasterly up to 20 knots during the afternoon. Seas: Up to 2 metres. Swell: Westerly 0.5 to 1.5 metres.

East Gippsland Coast: Lakes Entrance to 60nm east of Gabo Island

Strong wind warning for Victorian waters between SA-VIC Border and Mallacoota.

Forecast for Tuesday until midnight

Winds: West to northwesterly 10 to 20 knots tending west to southwesterly up to 30 knots during the afternoon then decreasing below 20 knots by early evening then becoming southwesterly up to 15 knots later in the evening. Seas: Up to 3 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 2 metres.

Forecast for Wednesday

Winds: Westerly 10 to 20 knots increasing to 20 to 25 knots around dawn then tending west to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots during the morning then becoming southwesterly 20 to 25 knots later in the evening. Seas: Up to 2 metres increasing to 2 to 3 metres during the morning. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 2 metres.

Forecast for Thursday

Winds: Southwesterly 10 to 20 knots decreasing below 15 knots during the morning then tending northeasterly up to 20 knots during the afternoon then increasing to 20 to 30 knots during the evening. Seas: Up to 2 metres increasing to 2 to 3 metres during the evening. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 1.5 metres decreasing to westerly about 1 metre during the evening.
